Toona sinensis also known as Chinese Toona or Chinese Mahogany is native to China.
A deciduous tree known for it’s florescent pink new growth. The 1 to 2 foot long leaves with pointed oblong leaflets turn from pink or red to yellow/bronze then to green with age. A traditional leafy vegetable famous for its nutritional and medical qualities. You can cut the new growth for several months in spring and early summer. The pinker or redder the new growth the greater the bioactive properties. The leaf of the Toona tree have a distinctive odor that can be quite pungent in closed quarters. The Chinese Mahogany’s roots bark and leaves have been used for over a thousand years in traditional Chinese Medicine to fight cancer, diabetes, male infertility and liver disease.
Smaller branches are burned in Buddhist temples for their fragrance and larger wood is valued for use in musical instruments and furniture. The wood is very durable and easy to work.
The Toona sinensis grows to 20 feet tall. White flowers appear on older wood in the spring and hang in long cluster below the foliage. Plant in full sun , water regularly. It is best to cut it to the ground every few years or trim down alternate stems to maintain size within the garden. Dig or cut runners to prevent spread.
