Toona sinensis also known as Chinese Toona or Chinese Mahogany is native to China.

A deciduous tree known for it’s florescent pink new growth. The 1 to 2 foot long leaves with pointed oblong leaflets turn from pink or red to yellow/bronze then to green with age. A traditional leafy vegetable famous for its nutritional and medical qualities. You can cut the new growth for several months in spring and early summer. The pinker or redder the new growth the greater the bioactive properties. The leaf of the Toona tree have a distinctive odor that can be quite pungent in closed quarters. The Chinese Mahogany’s roots bark and leaves have been used for over a thousand years in traditional Chinese Medicine to fight cancer, diabetes, male infertility and liver disease.

Smaller branches are burned in Buddhist  temples for their fragrance and larger wood is valued for use in musical instruments and furniture. The wood is very durable and easy to work.

The Toona sinensis grows to 20 feet tall. White flowers appear on older wood in the spring and hang in long cluster below the foliage.  Plant in full sun , water regularly.  It is best to cut it to the ground every few years or trim down alternate stems to maintain size within the garden. Dig or cut runners to prevent spread.

We are offering a well-established plant 10 to 12 inches tall .

We are open to the public by appointment only, please call us at (805) 969-9178 so we can explore dates and times for our get together. Weekdays between 2 pm and 6:30pm are best . GPS guidance will get you to our mailbox which is located approx. ¾ mi. from the Ranch on a single lane mountain road. We are not easy to find and generally discourage visitors who just want to look, I do this for several reasons , some of which are to limit the traffic on the private one lane road so my neighbors are not inconvenienced, not fill up our very limited parking spaces, and minimize the interruptions on our operations so I am able to have more time to spend with family.
