New Zealand Christmas Tree also known as Metrosideros tormentosus and Pohutukawa is native to New Zealand it thrives in seashore conditions, it can really take the wind, salt spray, and other special conditions that come to big plants growing within the sound of the surf.
The New Zealand Christmas Tree generally branches heavily from the ground up but can be pruned to have a single trunk . its leaves are firm , leathery, densely spaced on branches ; on young plants they are smooth , glossy green; on older plants they are dark green above, white and woolly underneath .Dark scarlet flowers , in big clusters covering the end of the branches , blooms May – June in the Northern hemisphere. Hardy to 30 degrees . Grows to 30 feet but makes a very good container plant as well as an excellent Bonsai subject
