Agave atrovirens also know as Maguey Del Cumbre is native to Mexico its glucose gray leaves are arranged in a large rosette they can be 7 to 8 feet long  by 8 to 10 inches wide with a rosette of 20 feet in diameter here in Santa Barbara Ca.

The Agave atrovirens will get big if grown in the ground , so plan on giving it the room it needs , as a container plant it will have giant dimensions as well  in time.

In Mexico Pulque a traditional beverage (3-4 % alcohol) made from the juice of this agave plant. Is this beverage the same as tequila? No, tequila is fermented and destilled to make a strong alcohol, while pulque is a milky , slightly foamy and somewhat viscous beverage made by fermeting (not destilling) the fresh sap of certain types of maguey.

There are many versions of where pulque comes from. Some people say it was one of the earliest alcoholic beverages produced in Central America, others say pulque originated as part of  some religious ceremonies and offered to Tepoztecatl, an Aztec god.

We are offering for sale  a pup taken from one of our parent plants they are 14 to 18 inches tall.

We are open to the public by appointment only, please call us at (805) 969-9178 so we can explore dates and times for our get together. Weekdays between 2 pm and 6:30pm are best . GPS guidance will get you to our mailbox which is located approx. ¾ mi. from the Ranch on a single lane mountain road. We are not easy to find and generally discourage visitors who just want to look, I do this for several reasons , some of which are to limit the traffic on the private one lane road so my neighbors are not inconvenienced, not fill up our very limited parking spaces, and minimize the interruptions on our operations so I am able to have more time to spend with family.
