Dalechampia disocoreifolia also known as Outrageous Purple Wings or Purple Angle Wings is native to Costa Rica and surrounding areas. A fast growing Vine of the Euphorbia family rather recently introduced to the USA.
Here in Santa Barbara CA. the Dalechampia disocoreifolia blooms year round at its summer through fall, its flowers as with most Euphorbia relatives are not as showy as the two large bracts surrounding them. These bracts are 2 to 3 inches long and are an intense Purple with serrated margins the bracts flare out like wings on either side of the curious orange and deep purple floral parts in the center. The overall effect is like that of many Purple Butterflies.
Plant the Dalechampia in full sun to medium shade, average water, and hardy to 29 degrees.
