Chorisia Speciosa

Floss Silk Tree also known as Chorisia speciosa , Kapok Tree , or South American Kapok Tree.

The Chorisia speciosa grows rapidly 3 to 5 feet a year for the first few years, then slowly to 40 feet tall. Young trunks are green, becoming gray with age, and heavily studded with thick heavy spines. The leaves are divided into leaflets like fingers of a hand; and drop off in the fall. The Chorisia speciosa flowers when the winter temperatures drop to about 30 degrees F. The flowers are large, showy, pink purplish rose, or burgundy somewhat resembling a narrow petaled hibiscus. Large green pods roughly Avocado shaped follow the flower and contain the Floss Silk, Kapok. The seeds are edible and taste like coconut.

The Floss Silk Tree is tender and must be grown in mild wintered areas only.
