California Bay Tree also known as Umbellularia Californica is native to USA and seen from Northern Baja California to Oregon.
A shrubby tree that develops multiple trunks, grows slowly to 40 feet. The California Bay grows in sun or shade and has low water needs. It is hardy to 0 degrees F. Narrow, pointed , medium green leaves are aromatic and the small yellow green flowers held in umbels that appear in late winter to early spring ,followed by a green fruit that resemble small avocados , this fruit is editable.
Planted in the landscape it lends itself to being a beautiful specimen tree or can be pruned into a dense formal hedge or tall screen. The aromatic leaf of the California Bay Tree can be used in cooking as well as soap making , if used in cooking remember it is much stronger than the Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) so one must remember to use less.
