Agave Deserti also known as Desert Agave is native to Southern California , Arizona , and Baja California it has a large rosette of gray green leaves armed with teeth , when it flowers the stalk can reach 20 feet tall covered with yellow flowers that attract hummingbirds.
Desert dwelling Indians used fiber form the leaves to make cloth , bowstrings and rope. The young flower stalks were rosted as were the buds and hearts of the plant and eaten.
This food was a dietary staple even into drought years.
Alcoholic drinks were also manufactured from the sweet juices of the Agave Deserti.
